3D Scanning as a Service for Simulation
ScanCraft Technologies
Bridging Real and Digital: Unlocking the Power of 3D Scanning & Digital Environments
Introduction: Why 3D Matters Today
In today’s world, customers expect immersive, interactive, and visually rich experiences. Whether it’s for marketing, training, product design, or simulation, businesses need digital assets that look and feel real. At ScanCraft Technologies, we specialize in capturing real-world objects and environments and transforming them into high-quality 3D assets for use in everything from product showcases to enterprise simulations.
Our expertise lies in two main capture methods: 3D Scanning and Photogrammetry. Both techniques bring the physical world into the digital space, but they each serve different purposes depending on the scale, accuracy, and detail required.
3D Scanning vs. Photogrammetry: What’s the Difference?
3D Scanning
What it is: Uses specialized hardware (such as structured-light scanners, laser scanners, or handheld scanners like Artec or Creaform) to capture an object’s precise geometry.
Best for:
- Small to medium-sized objects (car parts, machinery, consumer products).
- Projects requiring high accuracy and precise measurements.
- Engineering, reverse engineering, or parts that need exact digital replicas.
Benefits: Ultra-precise geometry, millimeter-level accuracy, fast capture times.
Photogrammetry
- What it is: Uses high-resolution photography and software to reconstruct 3D models from multiple overlapping images.
- Best for:
- Larger objects, architectural spaces, or entire environments (warehouses, showrooms, landscapes).
- Capturing rich textures, materials, and organic shapes.
- Projects where visual realism matters more than absolute precision.
- Benefits: Incredibly detailed textures and realistic visuals, scalable from handheld objects to entire buildings.
From Capture to Digital: The Full Workflow
Capturing the object or environment is only the first step. Turning that raw data into a usable 3D asset requires professional processing:
Capture Stage
Tools:
3D scanners (Artec Eva, Creaform Go!SCAN, FARO laser scanners).
DSLR or mirrorless cameras with photogrammetry rigs.
Output: Raw scan files or image sets.
Processing & Cleanup
Import scans into software such as Artec Studio, RealityCapture, Agisoft Metashape, or Polycam.
Remove noise, fill holes, align multiple scans, and merge into a single model.
-
Retopology & Optimization
High-resolution scans can be millions of polygons (too heavy for most uses).
We retopologize the model (rebuilding its geometry) to make it efficient and usable.
Tools: ZBrush, Blender, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max.
-
Texturing & Materials
Apply photorealistic textures from the real object/environment.
Bake high-detail data into maps (normal maps, displacement maps) for lightweight performance.
Rendering & Engine Integration
Import into Unreal Engine or Unity for interactive use:
- Virtual product showcases.
- Training simulations.
- Walkable architectural visualizations.
Or create smaller visual scenes in Blender for marketing, animations, and static renders.
